Album reviews: Viva La Cobra, by Cobra Starship

Label: Fueled By Ramen/ Decaydance Records

Rating: B+

Being one of the newest bands released on Fueled By Ramen/ Decaydance Records, this band is known for it’s hip-hop- rock blend of dance music, with the single “Bring It! (Snakes On A Plane)” that was featured on the Snakes On A Plane original Motion picturesoundtrack.

Not having really listened to Cobra Starship’s music before, it is fair to state that after I heard their sophomore effort, Viva La Cobra!, I have become a Hugefan.

The first time I heard Viva La Cobra!, I immediately wanted tobegin dancing. In every song on the album, there’s a continuous mix of hip-hop and rock music, with electronic accents, creating a perfect flow of almost- pop music.

Adding to the mix is also an array of extremely catchy lyrics such as “The city is at war/ Playtime for the young and rich/ Ignore me if you see me ’cause I just don’t give a shit” from The City Is At War’, the first track on the album, also channeling Justin Timberlake in the first line of the song, Kiss My Sass’, singing, “I’m bringing sassy back.”

Cobra Starship on this album also has an affinity for creating lyrics that make us love them almost as much as Fall Out Boy. No one can deny a band that claims, “If the world is ending, I’m throwing the party” from the track ‘Guilty Pleasure’.

The band developed one softer sounding song to go along with the danceable beats on the album, titled The World Has Its Shine (But I Would Drop It On A Dime)’ still able to keep more of a rock edge, with a slower, more contemporary rhythm.

They also makes sure to keep a bit of a heavier rock sound on tracks like One Day Robots Will Cry’, including heavier drum beats, more present guitar riffs, and an ever- present tambourine.

Considering this is one of thesuperior sophomore albums I have heard in a long time (sorry Justin Timberlake), I congratulate Cobra Starship on being able to stay away from the sophomore slump category’ with Viva La Cobra!, by making an album that’s fun for everyone to listen to.
