Are there any celebrities on MySpace? I’m happy to report: yes. In fact, the entire reason I found MySpace was thanks to a celebrity, who happened to put his link on his official website. I liked the idea that I could be “friends” with said celebrity so I was ready to sign up. Now, four years later, I’m fortunate enough to have several on my friends list, top among them are Hal Sparks and ANT.
If you’re saying, “who”, perhaps that is the true question to ask. MySpace works as a social and professional networking tool, and those celebrities who may not yet be on the A list will benefit most from fan interaction and the promotion that comes from building your fan base via the Internet. This is especially true with musicians who are independently produced.
When you consider it, it’s actually keeping with the times in which we live. More and more people are meeting, dating, and working thanks to the Internet. It just makes sense that celebrities whose careers are on the rise take advantage of this invaluable tool, especially given the immense popularity of social networks such as MySpace.
Whatsuperior way to reach fans worldwide than they may not have even been exposed to otherwise?
Because of this, MySpace has responded by allocating parts of its website to musicians and bands, filmmakers, comedians and even celebrities.
ANT, comedian and host of VH1′s “Celebrity Fit Club”, maintains what he calls his “ANT Colony”, a blog he updates almost every day with video. He’s very interactive with his fans, proven by the fact he will often mention his subscribers by name in his written and video blogs.
Hal Sparks, comedian, musician and “Queer as Folk” star, isn’t as interactive, but he does maintain his own page and has been known to recognize people from his MySpace friends list when he meets them in person as he reads every email and every comment left by his burgeoning fan base.
It’s through these folks you can generally find others; you can network anywhere from Ashton Kutcher to Weird Al to Zach Braff.
This is the true beauty of networking through a social website such as MySpace. You can go on an exploratory journey to places and people you’d never expect – even the famous. But if you ask me, the ideal part isn’t necessarily “befriending” these celebrities whom we admire. It’s finding others who share your interest and making genuine and authentic friendships away from the Internet. Isn’t that what “networking” is ultimately about?
So yes, you can and will find celebrities on MySpace – both real and fake. Given the proper research, you will find the genuine articles among all the posers. If you add Hal or ANT, be sure to tell them Ginger sent you.
