Best movie adaptations of books – Part 14

The Day of the Triffids-TV

The most well-done movie adaptations of recent memory, in my opinion, are the Harry Potter movies and the Lord of the Rings series. In the first case, involvement of the author helped ensure a faithful adaptation; in the latter, the writers/producers worked from a deep respect for the source material.

With the Harry Potter movies, sometimes the faithfulness of the adaptations has imported the problems of the books into the movies, including an occasional case of plot bloat and an episodic feel when the book proved too much for even a three-hour motion picture treatment (Goblet of Fire is the prime example here). But overall, the charm of the books has been maintained in the journey to the screen, supplying fans with a satisfying experience in seeing their favorite characters brought to life.

In the case of the Lord of the Rings, the screenwriters were a bit more willing toalter and condense where necessary, sometimes to the consternation of Tolkien purists but never to the detriment of the films. The result is a series of films which maintain all the magic of the books while imbuing the stories with the different kind of magic only the movies can supply.
