I don’t know about the best book to motion picture adaptations but I reckon that anytime anybodies tried to turn a Stephen King book into a film they always seem to end up being pretty rubbish.
I just don’t get it, the source material is always excellent and I think that most of Stephan Kings work should translate to the screen fairly easily. But time and again we are treated to low budget, straight to video adaptations.
There are one or two exceptions of course, notably The Shining and Misery. The Shining especially made me nearly poop my pants when I first watched it.
And of course let us not forget the Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile are both extremely powerful movies. The Green Mile in particular is one of the few films that has ever resulted in me shedding a tear or two.
Unfortunately though the bad still outweighs the good. If I’d never seen Silver Bullet, Pet Cemetery, Needful Things, Sleepwalkers, The Tommyknockers and the ridiculously long Television adaptation of The Stand, then those would be more than a few hours of my life I hadn’t felt I’d wasted.
Sorry Mr. King.
