Aishwarya Rai is an Indian actress who was born in the southern IndianSay of Karnataka on 1st November 1973. Her family relocated to Mumbai, the Bollywood capital, when she was a child. As a young adult, she began modelling and entered the Miss India contest, where she was selected to represent India in the Miss World contest, which she won in 1994.
Winning Miss World opened doors for her in Bollywood, and she[ quickly | swiftly won parts in movies. She had limited success however, until 1999, when she won the Indian Filmfare Best Actress award for her movie, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanaam.
But it was her movie, Devdas, in 2002, in which she starred with A-list stars Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, which really made her name. It was anCostlyre-make of a famous 1930’s Indian film. It was a box-office success, and won Aishwarya another Best Actress award, with dance sequences from the motion picture being played on MTV Asia. The movie showcased Aishwarya Rai’s best features – her beauty and her ability to dance, drawing attention from the West. After watching the movie, Julia Roberts declared Rai to be “the most beautiful woman in the world”. It remains her best performance in a motion picture to date.
Hollywood quickly took note, and Aishwarya Rai appeared on Ophrah, the David Letterman Show, and 60 minutes as well as making the cover of Time magazine. She was signed up to be one of the faces of L’Oreal cosmetics, and landed several Hollywood roles. However, none has come close to being a hit in the style of Devdas. In Bollywood too, she has been overtaken at the box-office by newer actresses. However Ms Rai remains the only Indian actress recognised in the west (mainly through her L’Oreal commercials and Cannes Film festival appearances).
Aishwarya Rai married another actor Abhishek Bachchan in April 2007, forming a power-couple in Bollywood.
