This is the annual, transatlantic romantic comedy. This year’s Love Actually as some people are promoting it. Christmassy? Check. Feel-good? Check. However it falls short as the humour seems contrived and the romances not all that believable or heartwarming for that matter.
First off, the story revolves around More »

Far too predictable and constantly dragged down by plot holes and epic clichs, Roland Emmerich’s latest special effects extravaganza still showcases enough silly fun for those who can easily suspend their disbelief and don’t demand well-conceived characters. Basically, no one should like such a film, yet it’s still hard notto care aboutthe sight of a herd of stampeding mammoths causing death and destruction.
The year is 10,000 B.C., and a More »

If there were an award given to the actor that moved so fast, no one could catch him, the recipient of that award would be Mr. Bruce Lee. He was so fast that his speed was considered “inhuman”. On November 27, 1940 a martial arts legend was born More »

Closer was one of those films which I’d wanted to watch for ages for several reasons:
a) I’ve always has a soft spot for Clive Owen
b) I have always thought Julia Roberts is a good actress
c) I’d never seen Jude Law in a film and had heard More »

Roland Emmerich always gives his audience an e-ticket ride. “Stargate,” “Independence Day,” and even “Godzilla” were thrill a minute adventures that had at least some element of character development and “bog idea” plots. “Stargate” suggestedancient history was forged by alien cultures. “Independence Day” showed humanity unifying in the face of a threat from outside our solar system. Even “Godzilla” had a theme, that science can More »

“Perhaps the next Hollywood ‘genius’ will be the man who can design the whole movie to look like a high-powered ad.” – Noted film critic Pauline Kael (1961)
In the 40-something years since Kael stated that there have been many many movies that have looked like wholesale high-powered ads but I thought of that quote quite a few times while watching THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Based on the ideal selling novel, More »

It is sad for me to have learned that by the end of this title, a major character would have died. (suspense)
My opinion is that after roaming through six of the titles till now, even if it is improving content-wise, the storyline is certainly not getting any fresher. More »

Harvey is a 1950 film based on Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, directed by Henry Koster, and starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull. After watching it on Wednesday night, I must admit it was the most delightful classic movie that I had seen in a long time. It seems that all of us, at one time or another, just need a break from reality so that we More »

Director Roland Emmerich has father issues. In most of his films, the son is traditionally rebellious, a non-conforming character who nearly always disobeys his father, only to learn that poppa knows best.
Emmerich has explored this father-son paradigm in “The Patriot,” where Heath Ledger’s character gave his dad (played by Mel Gibson) unnecessary grief, and in “The Day After Tomorrow” where father Dennis Quaid must travel More »

Whether titled Godzilla or Giant-Stampy-Lizard-Eats-New-Y ork, the Roland Emmerich remake of Japans classic monster movie, Gojira would have been a flop over time, by falling to one of the cardinal sins of filmmaking: Apathy.
The original Godzilla hit the chords in all the right places. in its Japanese homeland, it came acrossas a metaphor for the atomic bombs that had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki a mere nine More »

Of late, there have been very few examples of historical fiction in the film industry that go beyond just 200 years. Not very much history is explored in films, especially not in the action genre. However, this could be about to change.

The “hero” hasn’t disappeared from comic books, he has just changed faces.

Would the Sony/Tristar movie “Godzilla” have been more successful at the box office if it was titled something else? I state yes it would.
I believe that the mere fact that this motion picture was marketed as “Godzilla” made people ultimately hate it because an expectation wasn’t met. These weren’t just die-hard fans of the Godzilla films of the 60′s and the 70′s; these were fans of large summer blockbuster films More »

I am reminded of Jude 10.

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is a comedy you won’t soon forget. The characters are mostly endearing, and there are two knockout scenes that’ll be the subject of many blogs. The first involved a bit about a Dracula puppet musical, and the other? The shocking but funny display of full-frontal male nudity. We’ll get to that later.
If you have been dumped mercilessly by a More »

There was something magical about the movies of the early 1930′s, when films told large stories, and required evenLargerstars to tell them. Classics like The Champ, Captain Blood, My Man Godfrey, It Happened One Night, The Thin Man, and many others did their part to put Hollywood on the map during these early years, yet no film was quite as elaborate, quite as magnificent as 1932′s Grand More »

Even now I thoroughly enjoy spending a day watching children’s movies with my daughter from when she was little.
Sadly, I haven’t been able to share my all time favorite with her, Song of the South (1946). Being the first to combine live actors and animation, it was truly ground breaking.
Including stories by Uncle Remus I will never forget hearing Brer Rabbit beg Brer Fox not to throw him in More »

If there is one thing that you can state for director Michael Bay its that he knows how to blow things up. Lets forget for a second that he hasn’t made a competent film since his debut film Bad Boys (1995). Since then he is made over amped up excesses in filmmaking from The Rock (1996) to Pearl Harbor (2001) to Bad Boys II (2003). In The Island More »

Bruce Lee was undoubtedly the greatest martial artist of all time. I think the real tragedy is that he died so young and before Hollywood and Hong Kong really got a handle on how to make modern martial arts films. He never even got to fight anyone More »

We have all seen TV shows like Jerry Springer, Montel Williams, Ricky Lake, and Jeremy Kyle in which troublesome teens are packed off to boot camp in order to improve their behaviour. Four extremely beautiful people do extremely horrible things to one another in Closer, Mike Nichols’ pungent adaptation of Patrick Marber’s play that easily marks the Oscar-winning director’s best work in years. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a photographer who specializes in portraits of strangers; Dan (Jude Law) is an obituary writer struggling to become a novelist; Alice (Natalie Portman) is an American stripper freshly arrived in London after a bad relationship; and Larry (Clive Owen) is a dermatologist who finds love under the most unlikely of circumstances. When their paths cross it’s a dizzying supernova of emotions, as Nichols and Marber adroitly construct various scenes out of their lives that pair them again and again in various permutations of passion, heartbreak, anger, sadness, vengeance, pleading, deception, and most importantly, brutal honesty. It’s only until you are more than halfway through the motion picture that you will have to ask yourself exactly why you are (more…)

Beautiful to look at but impossible to recommend, “10,000 B.C.” is a ludicrously sculpted film from the master of ludicrous sculptures, Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow”).
I remember sitting in my local AMC Theatre several times over the past couple of months watching the pre-show trailer and short documentary about the making of “10,000 B.C.” and thinking to myself “This is either going to be really awesome More »

Jude Law’s Alfie, much like Michael Caine’s Alfie in the 1966 original, is what you’d call an unrepentant womanizer. He beds ‘em but never weds ‘em, and New York provides ample opportunity tocontinue the process–until reality slaps him in the face. Because Jude Law is, well, Jude Law, you can see why he gets away with it as long as he does, and the actor also pulls off the usually awkward trick of narrating directly to the camera. Neither his Alfie, however, nor director Charles Shyer’s remake emergesabsolutelywithout scratches. Law has a Chesire Cat carnality, but he emanates too much intellect to purchase him as the relatively dim bulb he is supposed to be. The film, meanwhile, is a bit soft around the edges; the whole thing would have more resonance if it wasn’t quite so intent on watching the unrepentant repent. Regardless, it’s a surprisingly thoughtful diversion, and there’s fine work from Marisa Tomei, Nia Long, and Susan Sarandon as the women who understan (more…)

Right off the bat let me state about “My Blueberry Nights” that the acting is superb-too bad it will not be seen by enough people.

Dead movie stars you miss
Curling up on the sofa, with a large bowl of popcorn, a soft drink on the end table, and a good horror motion picture on the TV, has always been one of my favorite late evening pastimes. The large risk of watching Vin Diesel movies these days is it may be more Diesel Van; such is his spluttering and clunky screen presence away from his action hero genre. ‘The Pacifier’ was an example of that painful viewing over the Christmas holiday and so the welcome reappearance of his brilliant Riddick character for its terrestrial TV debut a month later was a welcome reprieve.

It may be news to some people, but yes, there were fantasy films in the 50s. Heck, there were fantasy films earlier, with the Wizard of Oz being released in 1939. But can we cull, from the admittedly limited list available, the classic fantasy films from the 1950s?
Yes, we can. What’s interesting is that the coolest, mostpleasingand well-wrought fantasy films during this decade were mostly films made More »
