TEN LESSONS TO TEACH YOUR PRESCHOOLER

As a former kindergarten and preschool teacher, I have learned that there are lessons to be learned and they go beyond just learning letters, numbers and shapes. The following books help open the doors for teaching and learning:

Lesson 1: LEARNING CAN BE FUN! Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. is a fun book with rhythmic text that introduces all twenty six letters (upper and lower case) of the alphabet.

Lesson 2: COLORS ARE ALL AROUND US. Brown Bear Brown Bear by Bill Martin Jr. not only reinforces colors but encourages children to imitate reading the predictable text makes it easy and fun for your preschooler to read to YOU!

Lesson 3: IMAGINATION IS THE SPICE OF LIFE! Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barret will keep you are and your child laughing! It’s the story of a town that doesn’t need grocery stores because all of the food comes from the sky.

Lesson 4: EVERY FAMILY IS DIFFERENT. All Kinds of Families by Norma Simon shows all family types and sizes. It helps youstart a dialog with your child about acceptance and tolerance.

Lesson 5: EVERYONE IS SPECIAL. We’re Different, We’re the Same by Bobbi Kates shows kids that in some ways we are the same, but thatthere are severalthings that make each person special and unique.

Lesson 6: IT IS BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a timeless story about a tree who gives to aTiny boy throughout his life. The boy grows older and the tree continues to give. Adults will love this one to!

Lesson 7: EVERYONE HAS A BAD DAY ONCE IN A WHILE. In Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst, Alex wakes up with gum in his hair and it only gets worse so he wants to move to Australia. He learns that even in Australia people have bad days.

Lesson 8: ALWAYS TRY TO “GO” WHEN YOUR PARENTS TELL YOU. In I Have to Go by Robert Munsch, as soon as Andrew’s parents get him dressed in all of his layers of clothinghe has to go to the bathroom. Hilarious story! And if your preschooler adores this book, Robert Muncsh has wonderfully humorous stories!

Lesson 9: SOMETIMES PEOPLE AND PETS WE LOVE DIE. In the Tenth Good Thing About Barney by Judith Viorst, the family cat dies and the mother tells her son to think of 10 good things to state at Barney’s funeral.

Lesson 10: NEVER, EVER, EVER FORGET TO LAUGH! If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff is a funny story of a Littleboy that gives a mouse a cookie only to find that next the mouse needs a glass of milk. The story gets crazier and funnier from there!
