Dressed to Kill!
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
(PG, general release)
*
Based on the bestselling novel Roman a Clef by Lauren Weisberger, a loosely based description of her own experiences as an apprentice journalist under infamous Vogue editor Anna Wintour, The Devil Wears Prada is an extremely engaging coming of age story set in the perfumed halls of Runway which I keep reading is one of if not the most influential fashion magazine in the industry!
Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a nave young woman from the Midwest who moves to New York seeking her first job. She obtains an interview with Runway, the famous fashion magazine and enthusiastically Statesher journalistic qualifications & ambitions, “I was editor of the Daily North-western” Andy explains. Miranda Priestly (the magnificent Meryl Streep) the fearsome editor in chief of Runway gives her a withering look of disdain and promptly hires her because with her frumpy looking wardrobe & zero interest in fashion she’s sure to be a success in a job which “a million girls would die for.” Priestly rules her empire with an iron fist; glaring eyes and an acerbic tongue which could cut you in two, so Emily (Emily Blunt) who’s petrified of her boss jealously gives the new girl tips on what’s needed and how not to get fired!
She essentially becomes a dogsbody racing around Manhattan getting coffees; carrying clothes & of course getting 2duplicates of the unpublished Harry Potter book for Miranda’s darling kids, because she is Miranda Priestly & she can have everything she wants! This dragon lady is demanding & impossible to please but it’s the promise of a plethora of job offers opening up due to working a year for Miranda that keeps Andy from going la, la! With a Littlehelp from veteran stylist Nigel (Stanley Tucci) she’s transformed into a graceful; stylish & straight haired fashion exhibit, in the process winning the grudging respect of Miranda & her bitchy fellow office workers. Despite her ideal intentions Andy is seduced by the potent magnetism of the fashion world including a charming writer/lady- killer of Christian Thompson who takes an interest in her journalistic work. This puts pressure on her relationship with her live in chef boyfriend Nate (Adrian Grenier) who doesn’t like the person she’s become!
