Grey’s Anatomy: Musical Montage Cop-out

!! Grey's Anatomy BooK !!

Grey’s Anatomy uses music betterthan any show I’ve ever seen on television. This is a fact. Perhaps show’s have had bettermusic. This is not what I am arguing. Grey’s Anatomy’s deployment of their music is the most precise and calculating to ever hit the small screen.

This is no small compliment either. Music is a key component in any dramatic production, much more than you;d think. If you can, watch a tense scene in a motion picture or TV show with the sound off. The scene might seem pedestrian, unnecessary. Music builds tension; it triggers emotion. If you hear a certain type of music, you subconsciously are told how to feel.

Maybe this manipulative. It pretty much is. Grey’s Anatomy takes it one step further, by using the musical montage to great effect, and constantly. The montage, however, is a trickyTiny beast. It is difficult to tame and, as a result, the success rate is low, even on an established show like Grey’s Anatomy. The BuddyTV article does a wonderful job of making it clear that this is more a result of the difficulty of the montage, rather than a deficiency of the crew.

Grey’s Anatomy still, even with the occasional botched montage, uses its music so well that any poor use of montage is[ quickly | swiftly forgiven. The three soundtracks to the series that have been released are all, without question, spectacular. It is a marvel to watch when a creator of a show can mix in some great music into an already great drama.
