How the Internet has affected television viewing

The Grotesque

I am too young to remember the excitement people had from listening to a radio broadcast in their home for the first time. The ability to receive a preplanned offering from a group with the intent to entertain had to be a joyous event for those so blessed to have one of the electronic devices that would receive it. The same I imaginecan be said for the television, except of course, for the fact that the TV revolutionized entertainment by providing visual entertainment to our world.

For more than a half century, TV had a stranglehold on the market in that there was only one way to receive the TV offerings, which was through the three major broadcast networks. The American Broadcasting Company (ABC). The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) were the only platforms available to provide TV programs to the populace on aHuge scale.

Within the last twenty five years, cable companies have permeated the marketplace to offer us a reliable alternative that isn’t dependant on proper weather conditions or a roof top antenna. With this option, many specific types of channels were developed that provide targeted subject groups in their programming. This advance began to fragment the TV audience, heralding a shift in the TV watching paradigm.

Today, the paradigm is completelydifferent as the leading telecommunications companies continue to broaden the scope of offerings for technology hungry and affluent customers. Many of the providers of conventional TV offer their shows on the world wide web sites, which gives the viewers anotherchance to view their favorite shows.

With the growth of cable, many more offerings meant that instead of having the three main networks toselect between, we now can have over one hundred potential offerings at any moment of the day. It is possible to record a show for later viewing, which many people do, but the internet gives us a handle on the most valuable asset in the world, time.

Through the previously mentioned network and cable channel internet sites, viewers can log on at their leisure any time of the day or night to review their favorite show. This is a great convenience for any TV fan who struggles with being able to watch programs when they are offered. I catch up on several series using this method as some are played too late in the evening to accommodate my personal schedule.
