Comparison of Overcast by Nancy Del Pesco, Shrimpboat by Nancy Del Pesco, Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse by Nancy Del Pesco and Orange Sea by Lisa Ballard
I like all of these seascape paintings. They all represent the sea yet they are all very different. Each uses different hues and blending techniques within the sea. The colour of the sea in Overcast’, for example, is very different to that of the sea in Shrimpboat’, even though they’re by the same artist. Orange Sea’ compromises between the light and dark, blue and grey colours. The sea is obviously not calm, yet the colour of the waves and current isn’t a mediocre grey like in Overcast’. The tints of light catch the tips of the waves beautifully. In Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse’, however, it is the rocks which catch the light. I like the colours of Shrimpboat’ and Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse’ but in these paintings it isn’t the sea which is the most vibrant subject. I prefer seascapes where there is movement and you can see the power of the sea and where the sea is the focal point. I like Overcast’ althoughI feel it is too dull and stormy. My favourite seascape on this page is Orange Sea’ because of its range of colours althoughwhen I try my own seascape I will combine techniques used in Orange Sea’ with some used in Overcast’.
