Is Kelly Clarkson great? -I

Kelly Clarkson: Breakaway – Not just a one hit wonder

What do you think of when you hear the name Kelly Clarkson? At first, you may think American Idol. Kelly Clarkson is the show’s first winner, and by far the most successful. Is it only because she was the first winner of a show that has become FOX’s biggest money maker? If you missed 2006′s Grammy Awards, you missed a lot. Kelly snagged 2 of the biggest awards in music, validating her success in the industry. But why? What was so great about a TV show contestant that would allow her to win a Grammy? One word: Breakaway. The third most successful album of 2005 (only after Mariah Carey and Green Day. Way to go Kel!), titled Breakaway, is the sophomore album where she simply did that. Broke away into her own.

The song Breakaway was released in June of 2004, originally for the movie Princess Diaries 2. This was a different more mellow sound we heard, not typical ballads such as the first hit A Moment Like This. Breakaway just never goes away. Later that year when chosing the title for her album, Breakaway fit appropriately. Not only was it the break out single for that album, it was also the song that would fit her life change perfectly.

This is what is written in chartbeat July, 2005:

TURNING 21: As speculated last week, this week Kelly Clarkson reasserts her dominance on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. After a one-week gap in which Michael Buble’s “Home” (143/Reprise) moved to the head of the class, “Breakaway” (Walt Disney/Hollywood) is back on top, for a 21st week at No. 1.

That ties Clarkson’s “Breakaway” with Celine Dion’s “A New Day Has Come” as the longest-running AC chart-topper by a female artist. “Breakaway” and “A New Day Has Come” are also tied as the second-longest AC No. 1s of all time, behind the 28-week run of “Drift Away” by Uncle Kracker featuring Dobie Gray.

Going into the second single, Since U Been Gone, no one saw coming what was about to happen. The song hit number one on nearly every chart. The sound was more intense than we’ve seen of Kelly. It was a success. The song had been offered to other artists, and when Kelly received it she declared it to be too “poppy”, requested too roughen it up and add more guitars. The writers of the song lit up and agreed, saying that was their original vision. Kelly did it justice.

But what we didn’t know much about Kelly, was her ability to write songs. Claiming she is been writing since she was 10, the 6 songs she penned
