Obviously, anyone who has seen any clips of ”Last Kiss” will immediately state to themselves ” Hey, this looks like more boring version of ”Garden State!” To be fair, if anyone subjected themselves to seeing this film, they would know that they were right. Of television’s ”Scrubs,” Zach Braff is cast as Michael, a late 20-ish architect. He has a loving girlfriend Jenna (Jacinda Barrett) whom he lives with in a condo in the suburbs. One day, upon visiting Jenna’s parents (Blythe Danner and Tom Wilkinson) the couple spill the beans about Jenna being pregnant. Michael appears happy on the outside, but deep down is afraid because he believes that having a baby with Jenna would ultimately evolve into the ”m” word…….marriage.
For some reason or the other, he develops a pre-mid-life crisis because he feels that his life his becoming boring and predictable (ironically the same plot of ”Garden State”). During a chance encounter, Michael eventually meets a 19 year old college student Kim (Rachel Bilson of ”The O.C.”) at a friend’s wedding. Instantly, Michael and Kim ”click” but he knows that it’s in his ideal interest not to be tempted by Kim’s free-spitited charm. There’s really not a lot going on with the plot, which concludes of Michael’s growing doubt about his future with Jenna and the freedom he could secure partying the night away with Kim and her college friends.
Elsewhere, there is a moronic-subplot about Michael’s friends planning some uniqueroad trip to ”get away” from life, and it goes nowhere. In the few scenes that they’ve together, Braff and Bilson haveTiny chemistry. Thesuperior performances came from Danner, as a woman who has been married for 25 years and finally realizes the deterioration of her marriage to Wilkinson. Barrett was likeable as Jenna, who has such much glee and charm for her boyfriend and on-the-way baby. After the misfire called ”Elizabethtown,” I’m sure that viewers like myself are pretty fatigued about films featuring a boring lead trying to find meaning in life. However, if I had an attractive live-in-girlfriend, I would definitely be happy. Ironically, Braff’s Michael would be a good candidate for a speak show that features deadbeat fathers. Truthfully, I am not sure who the intended audience is for ”The Last Kiss.” The film is too slow for teenagers and unappealing for adults.
