Movie reviews: Yakeen

ON THE EVE OF KRRISH: Hrithik Roshan and _Priyanka_Chopra_at_Changi_Airport

Yakeen (meaning “Trust”) is billed as a suspense thriller and stars the gorgeous model turned actor Arjun Rampal, Miss World 2000 Priyanka Chopra, ex-model Kim Sharma and Saurabh Shukla, with Anang Desai, Atul Parchure and Ankur Nayyar in supporting roles and Sudhanshu Pande in a special appearance. The film was released in June 2005 and is the directorial debut of Girish Dhamija.

Yakeen is about 2 hours long (not too long for a Bollywood film) and is certified as a 12.

~*~PLOT SUMMARY~*~

The film starts off quite dramatically with a car crashing 40ft off a cliff and the occupants end up in hospital – Simar Oberoi (Chopra) wakes up with cuts and bruises and is told her husband, rich businessman, Nikhil (Rampal) is at death’s door. He pulls through but has amnesia. He can remember the everyday things of life such as how to speak and walk, etc, but doesn’t recall anything about his life itself. He is nursed back to health over 6 months and then his devoted wife Simar is allowed to take him back to their lavish home.

He goes back to work and starts mixing with his best friend Siddharth (who also happens to be his business partner) and his sister Tanya (Sharma) who starts planting seeds of doubt in his mind. He starts plotting bits of his previous life together and realises that all is not as rosy as it seems. He then starts to suspect his wife of having an affair due to certain evidence he finds and hires a detective Chaman (Shukla) to do some digging around. Who is Kabir (Pande) and what does he have to do with Nikhil or his wife or anything? Or is he just a red herring? Why is Tanya so intent on planting doubts in Nikhil’s mind?

What Nikhil finds out eventually blows his mind (and yours as the viewer) as the story takes many twists and turns hurtling towards the dramatic and rather surprising climax.

~*~MUSIC~*~

The lyrics are by Sameer and music is by Himesh Reshammiyah. The first song is within the first 15 minutes and is a romantic tune, fairly pleasant but not exactly memorable. The rest of the songs are planted at annoyingly regular intervals, not unpleasant songs but most of them didn’t stay in my memory and if I heard them again I certainly would not recognise them as being from this film. There is just one song in the film with a quite haunting melody which was repeated at various intervals which I recognised when I heard on the radio and somewhat enjoyed, the song’s called “Bhoolna Nahi” which means “don’t forget” and is sung
