Ah, the question that never has an easy answer like “What’s your favorite color?” or “What’s your favorite food?” These are the tough questions that life is really about. It’s easy to answer the ‘will you marry me’s’ and ‘do you want this job or that?’, which have a definite gut feeling. But the everyday stuff, like favorite music, that is where conversation gets started. This is where people show their true passions; perhaps the very essence of their souls.

Yes, of course music takes you to many different places in the past and present with glimpses of the future. But I’m sure everyone has at least a top five for the day. Unfortunately, people think that this list has to remain the same everyday, I don’t. Being a Gemini, I have at least two minds about everything. I remember just a few months ago Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” sure was in my top five list, howeverThis day it might be in the top 100. That’s not to state that I don’t enjoy the tune, it’s just a different mindThis day than three months ago.

Admitting this is difficult, but when I was driving in my vehicle one day, “MMMMM Bop” by Hanson and some song, by The Backstreet Boys, “…you are my fire, the one desire…” were on the top five list complete with dance routines suitable for the car. I do have a favorite song, this song will probably change tomorrow, just as it was different a couple of days ago. It all depends on the moment. Today’s hit is Planet Funk’s “The End”. I have a feeling that tomorrow’s maybe Cake’s “It’s Coming Down”, but it could all change in an instant.

We all remember Allie McBeal’s therapist advising Allie to find a theme song for her life. I took that and could never settle on one. So I made a list of different situations and created a theme song for those important moments in life (the not so important ones as well). When I’m missing friends, there are two songs, Incubus-”Wish You Were Here” and Dispatch-”Elias” that play in my head. During Thanksgiving, my favorite song is Arlo Gutherie’s “Alice’s Restaurant”. When I’m thirsty, I enjoy singing “I like Cold Beverages” by G. Love and Special Sauce. During the lonely Christmas time, I listen to Joni Mitchel’s “River”. When I do not want to get out of bed, Jack Johnson’s “Banana Pancakes”, comes to mind. When I have no money, I think of Sublime’s “What I got”. Trying to keep long distance relationships, but it’s just not working, I think of “Wires and Waves” by Rilo Kiley and when it is working Greg Brown’s “Not High”. You get the idea.

Music developed long ago aiding in ceremony and celebrations. It is part of the human spirit to express itself through melodies and rhythms. There is a reason why babies feel soothed by their mothers’ singing, why churches and temples have bells and drums. At one time all of these tunes where someone’s favorite song.
