R&B music has the capability to get you in the mood for love with that special someone or even get you off your backside and onto the dance floor. Originally, R&B had a mix of Jazz, gospel and blues, now R&B is incorporating modern genres such as funk, pop, hip hop and even rock. Here is my personal list of the 10 top R&B songs of all time from the golden oldies of the motown age to the distorted voices high tempo music of today.
Number 10 “Yeah!” By Usher
Ok, I know you’re thinking, Why usher? But did you know that this song top the billboard Hot 100 charts and stayed there for 12 weeks, winning a host of awards, millions of DJs requesting this song to be played on their respected radio stations. In fact, he remixed “Yeah” specially made for the finale of Dancing with the Stars 2008.
Number 9 “My Prerogative” By Bobby Brown
Primarily known for his rocky relationship with Whitney Houston and his addiction to drugs, yet Bobby Brown was the Usher of the 80s. “They state I’m nasty, I really don’t care – that’s my prerogative” those words alone saw this song shoot to the top of the billboard hot 100 chart earning his only hit record. In fact, in 2004 Britney Spears cover Brown’s song with her breathy-frog-in-thought voice.
Number 8 “I’ll Be Missing you” By P Diddy and Faith Evans
P Diddy recorded this song in the memory of his ideal friend Notorious B.I.G who was shot the same year the song was released. “I’ll be missing you” samples Sting’s “Every step you take” enjoyed several weeks at 1# all over the world. This song still remains the best modern R&B track ever recorded with the help of Faith’s angelic ballads and Diddy’s sweet boy rap style.
Number 7 “Ain’t Nobody” By Chaka Khan
Little does most people know that “Ain’t Nobody” was supposed to be given to Michael Jackson but instead record execs give it to Chaka Khan any argument? I thought not. “Ain’t Nobody” reached the top of the US charts and lit up the dance clubs all over the world in 1983 and it primarily the anthem for the era of the early 80s and is still a true R&B classic.
Number 6 “I heard it through the grapevine” By Marvin Gaye
Recorded and released in 1968, this song is arguably one of the greatest songs ever made. Though Gladis Knight covered the song with her version and it widely commended for it, Marvin’s version bleeds passion, love and soul. It took Marvin 2 months to records using unconventional instruments like voodoo-style drums, it still sold
