Do you really smell like a celebrity? It’s hard to tell. The celebrities certainly market the perfume they wear. I have seen Jennifer Lopez promoting ‘Glow’, ‘Still’ and ‘Live’ on all the speak shows, but did Hillary Duff really come up with the recipe of secret smelling ingredients that makes her scent, ‘With Love’, so irresistible to the consumer? It is hard toenvision Paris Hilton standing over a huge pot in her kitchen testing the different aromas of rose petals, ginger and amber musk. Does Beyonce even wear her own fragrance, ‘True Star’? Super stars can certainly purchase the moreHigh-priced designer brands like ‘Joy’, ‘Juicy Coutore’, ‘Missoni Parfum’, ‘Shalimar’, or ‘Intense Deluxe’ by Prada, which retail for well over $100 a bottle.
I have purchased and do wear several of the celebrity fragrances. Even though Britney Spears is a very unpopular role model currently, I do have a bottle of ‘Curious’. I enjoy the fresh and light scent of magnolia and jasmine and adore the genie like blue bottle. I also own Paris Hilton’s scent, ‘Heiress’, which is made from apples and mimosa blossoms and is packaged in a smart pink bottle with silver glitter. In addition, I purchased some of Jessica Simpson’s ‘Dessert’ line. The whipped body cream and kissable body shimmer smell and taste delicious.
Did I purchase them because a celebrity’s name was on the fragrance? I have to admit that was one of the reasons I tried them out. Do I really believe that Britney, Paris and Jessica are wearing the scents? No, I don’t. Do I think they really had a hand in making them? No, not really. Mariah Carey was quoted saying that she never used perfume before in her life because of her sensitive skin, but surprisingly when promoting her brand, ‘M’, she was suddenly able to wear it. Funny coincidence, is not it?
The truth is that most celebrity scents are created by large perfume companies like Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder and Coty. The massive stars just agree to put their name on the product and help promote it, in order to reap in 5-10% of the profits. So the biggest effort that Danielle Steele or Donald Trump made was a meeting with perfume company executives to sample a variety of already-made scents and bottle designs.
More and more celebrities are jumping on the bandwagon. Who can blame them, it’s easy money andTiny effort. In America, we love celebrities and can’t get seem to get enough gossip about what they are wearing, who they are dating, and what type of perfume and jewelry they are wearing. The celebrity perfume trend is spreading to clothing lines, handbags and shoes. If a celebrity’s name is on a product, it will probably sell millions. However, the next time you’re thinking about buying a celebrity fragrance or product, keep in mind that Britney and J-Lo are just advertising a product and probably have never ever used it in their daily lives.
